Stay Safe this Holiday Season: DUI Awareness from Halloween to New Year’s

As the air turns chilly (or less hot for us Floridians) and festive decorations light up our streets, the holiday season reminds us of joy, togetherness, and celebration. However, amidst all the cheer, it is important to acknowledge the increase in DUI (Driving Under the Influence) incidents from Halloween through New Year’s.

While many raise a toast to good times, the consequent decisions some make to get behind the wheel can have devastating impacts.

Consider these sobering statistics:

• The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that during the holiday season, two to three times more people die in alcohol-related crashes than during comparable periods the rest of the year.
• Over the past five years, an average of 300 people have lost their lives in DUI crashes in the week between Christmas and New Year alone.
• Halloween night sees a significant spike, too. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that 44% of all motor vehicle deaths on Halloween night involve alcohol.
